| dc.description.abstract | The experiment was conducted in the central farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka to evaluate the effect of some chemical insecticides on insect pests attacking maize in the field during the period from November, 2012 to April, 2013. Six insecticides were applied in replicated maize field. The treatments were T1 (Marshal 20EC @ 2mlIL of water); T2 (Dursban 20EC @ 2.5mLIL of water); T3 (Carbofuran 5G @ 17kg/ha in the soil); T4 (Dimethoate 40EC @ 2.5mllL of water); T5 (Quinaiphos 25EC @ 2mllL of water); T6 (Shobicron425EC @ 2m1/L of water); and T7 (untreated control). The result revealed that treatment T5 (Quinaiphos 25EC@ 2mlIL of water) treatment was the most effective for reducing 90.22%, 67.37%, 64.22%, 83.84% and 62.79% respectively common armyworm, stem borer, leaf hopper, corn borer and aphid. The treatment T3 showed 77.17%, 56.84%, 45.87%, 56.57% and 52.73% respectively for reduction of those insect pests and T6 had the least performance over control. Quinaiphos was also most effective insecticide for increasing corn number and grain weight per cob 205.83% and 41.23% respectively and in T6 it was50% and 11.57% respectively. In terms of yield Quinaiphos treatment was most effective increasing yield (130.23%) followed by T3 (100.2%) and T1 (63.66%) treated plot. T5 treatment caused least leaf infestation of common armyworm (75.94 %) and corn infestation (84.39%) by corn earworm. The application of Quinaiphos at 7 days intervals was the best effective treatment for the control of major insect pests in the maize field. | en_US |
