the Journal of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University&#13;

their respective field of specialization. This year, we&#13;

who reviewed and edited the article for Volume 15,&#13;

<summary type="text">SCREENING OF BACTERIAL ENDOPHYTES FROM RICE LEAF SHEATH AGAINST A  VIRULENT ISOLATE OF Rhizoctonia solani

The research was conducted to identify the bacterial&#13;
endophytes from rice leaf sheath against Rhizoctonia&#13;
solani that caused sheath blight disease of rice. This&#13;
study was done in the Mycology and Advanced&#13;
Nematology Laboratory of the Department of Plant&#13;
Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.&#13;
Twelve R. solani isolates were collected from six&#13;
upazilas of Bangladesh. Among twelve isolates,&#13;
RSRPS11 showed the highest relative lesion height&#13;
(30.66%) on BRRI Dhan 34 in pot. The highest disease&#13;
severity (20.45%) was also recorded for isolate&#13;
RSRPS11. Eight bacterial endophytes were isolated&#13;
from healthy leaf sheaths of rice from these six areas.&#13;
Endophytic bacteria showed creamy, milky white,&#13;
creamy yellow, orange yellow, and pale white colonies&#13;
in color. Colony size variation was also observed. At 7&#13;
days of dual culture with R. solani, five isolates&#13;
showed no inhibition, and Iso-4 produced the highest&#13;
(51.11 %) inhibition zone. These strains of R. solani&#13;
and the potential bacterial endophyte could be used in&#13;
future research of sheath blight disease management.

Small ruminants, such as sheep and goats, play a&#13;
pivotal role in the economy of Bangladesh,&#13;
contributing significantly to both rural livelihoods and&#13;
national income. However, it is hampered by the&#13;
varieties of diseases, among which Peste des Petits&#13;
Ruminants (PPR) is extremely significant. In addition,&#13;
Naogaon is located adjacent to an area with a high&#13;
prevalence of PPR (Rajshahi), but it was previously&#13;
neglected, and no data has been recorded. To ascertain&#13;
the prevalence of PPR in Naogaon Sadar Upazila, a&#13;
study was carried out. Data were obtained through&#13;
direct interviews with goat owners at the Upazila&#13;
Veterinary Hospital (UVH) and indirectly from the&#13;
hospital's register book, covering November 2022 to&#13;
October 2023. Of the 572 observed goats, the&#13;
prevalence of PPR was the highest (32.17%) among&#13;
other diseases. Results indicate a significantly higher&#13;
prevalence in Jamunapari breeds (44.87%) compared to&#13;
Black Bengal breeds (35.86%); females (57.86%) are&#13;
more likely to be affected than males (22.28%). The&#13;
prevalence of PPR was highest in the rainy season&#13;
(36.11%), followed by autumn (32.35%), winter&#13;
(31.45%), or summer (28.36%). There was a higher&#13;
prevalence in young goats (38.56%) compared to kids&#13;
or adult goats. Moreover, non-vaccinated goats&#13;
(42.37%) were more affected than vaccinated goats&#13;
(5.66%). Pearson's chi-square tests with a P value at the&#13;
significance level (P&lt;0.05) were used to analyze all of&#13;
the data. Age, breed, vaccination status, and&#13;
deworming were significantly (p &lt; 0.05) associated&#13;
with PPR. Uncovering the prevalence and&#13;
corresponding risk factors of PPR in a previously&#13;
neglected area, this study will help to establish&#13;
improved disease control strategies for stakeholders to&#13;
minimize this disease's associated economic losses.

The experiment was carried out in the Postharvest&#13;
laboratory at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University,&#13;
Dhaka, Bangladesh. The single factor experiment was&#13;
laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD)&#13;
with three replications. The present research was&#13;
conducted to evaluate the effect of different postharvest&#13;
treatment on shelf life and quality of tomato. The&#13;
postharvest treatments were (viz: Wo = Tap water dips,&#13;
WH= Hot water dips, I = With ice, Io= Without ice, P=&#13;
Perforated Polybag, Po = Non-Perforated Polybag, RH=&#13;
80±5% Relative Humidity and Ro= Relative humidity&#13;
at room condition 60-65%. Results revealed that the&#13;
lowest disease incidence (43.54%) and weight loss&#13;
(7.62 %) were recorded from T13 (Hot water dips +&#13;
With ice + Perforated Polybag + 80±5% RH) treatment&#13;
where highest disease incidence (100%) and weight&#13;
loss (16.17 %) were found in T12 (Tap water dips +&#13;
Without ice + Control + RH at room condition 60-&#13;
65%) treatment. The highest shelf life (17 days) and&#13;
quality of tomato were obtained from T13 (Hot water&#13;
dips + With ice + Perforated Polybag + 80±5% RH)&#13;
treatment. The better performance was observed in&#13;
tomatoes when treated with hot water including ice and&#13;
storage with perforated polybag and 80±5% relative&#13;
humidity for longer shelf life and quality.
