dc.description.abstract The study was conducted in the field of' Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during October 2007 to April 2008 to find out the effect of nitrogen on the growth and yield of tomato varieties. The experiment consisted of two factors viz., Factor A: Four level of nitrogen (N0: Control. N1 : 200 kg N/ha. N2: 230 kg N/ha and N3 : 260 kg N/ha) and Factor B: Three tomato varieties (V1 : BARI Tomato 1. V,: BAR! Tomato 2 and V 3: BART Tomato 3). The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. In case of nitrogen, highest number of fruits per plant (36.70). maximum diameter of fruit (3.47 cm) and the highest yield (83.62 i/ha) was observed from N2 and the lowest value was observed from N o . In case of varieties, the highest number of fruits per plant (39.03). maximum diameter of fruit (3.45 cm) and the highest yield (81.50 tlha) was recorded from V2 again the lowest value was found from V1 . For the interaction effect of nitrogen and varieties, the highest number of fruits per plant (41.87). the maximum diameter of fruit (3.59 cm) and the highest yield (88.00 i/ha) was recorded from N 2V2 and the lowest value was recorded from N0V1 . The highest benefit cost ratio (2.44) was recorded from N2V2 and lowest (1.87) was obtained from N0V1 . From economic point of view, it is apparent from the above results that the combination of 230 kg N/ha and BAR! Tomato 2 was more profitable than rest of the treatment combination. en_US
