PARTICIPATION OF COMMON INTEREST GROUP (CIG) MEMBERS IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

The main objectives of this study were to determine and describe the extent of participation of Common Interest group (CIG) members in community development and explore the relationships between the participation of CIG members in community development with their selected characteristics. Eleven villages of Monohardi tJpazilla under Narsingdi district was selected as the study area. Data were collected from 110 CIG members by using a pre-tested interview schedule during the period from 30 July to 02 September, 2012. Appropriate scales were developed in order to measure the concerned variables. A statistical software package named SPSS 11.5 was used to analyze the data and Karl Pearson's Correlation Co-efficient was computed in order to explore the relationship of participation of the CIG members in community development with their selected characteristics. Findings revealed that highest proportion (78.1 percent) of the CIG members had medium participation in community development compared to 16.4 and 5.5 percent having high participation and low participation respectively. Correlation analysis indicated that nine, out of twelve characteristics of the CIG members namely, level of education, effective farm size, annual family income, Training exposure, communication exposure, cosmopoliteness, involvement in CIG, Knowledge on CIG related community development activities, attitude towards community development had significant positive relationships with their participation in community development. Two characteristics namely, age and family size had no significant relationship with their participation in community development. Other one characteristics had significant negative relationship with their participation in community development. Based on descending order of Problem Faced Index (PFI), indicates 'no proper guideline from Union and upazila producer's organization' ranked first followed by 'lack of interaction among the Cbs'.
