dc.description.abstract Thirty exotic genotypes of tossa jute (Corcizorus olliorious L.) from different geographic origins were grown at the Central Jute Agricultural Experiment Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Jagir, Manikganj, during April. 2007 to September 2007 to study their variability and genetic correlation coefficient for 9 morphological characters. Signilicant variation was observed among the tested genotypes for diflérent traits except base diameter. Uigh (lenotypic Coellicient of Variation (GCV) was observed for fibre weight, stick weight, green weight without leaves and green weight with leaves. High heritability values with high genetic advance in percentage of mean were obtained for green weight without leaves, green weight with leaves, stick weight and fibre weight. All the genotypes showed maximum increase in plant height from 90 to 105 days of emergence. Oenotypic correlation showed positive association of fibre yield with plant height, green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves and stick weight. At phenotypie level, green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves and stick weight did not show significant relation with plant height, base diameter, node number. inter nodal length and leaf area. Significant and high positive associations were observed between fibre yield and green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves and stick weight. Path coefficient analysis indicated maximum direct contribution of stick weight per plant towards fibre yield followed by followed by green weight without leaves per plant, base diameter and leaf area. The genotypes Cl, (33. 06, 07, (312, 018 and 020 showed better performance than the check varieties 0-9897, 0-72 and OM- 1 in respect of fibre yield per plant. These genotypes might be utilized in future breeding programmes for improvement of this crop species. en_US
