dc.description.abstract The purpose of the study was to document the socio-economic characteristics of the jute cultivars; to estimate the costs, returns and profitability of jute production; to estimate the major factors affecting profitability of jute production; to identify the major problems faced by the farmers and suggest some policy recommendations. The study was undertaken purposively in Mirzapur upazilla under Tangail district. Validated and well-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from 60 jute cultivars during 1st March to 1st May, 2021. Per hectare gross return of jute cultivation was Tk. 174135. Per hectare gross margin was Tk. 85737. Total net return was estimated Tk. 73843.09 per hectare. Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.74. CobbDouglas production function analysis was carried out for examining the factors affecting the profitability of input use. In most of the cases the coefficients of seed cost, Urea cost, TSP cost and MoP cost had significant positive effect on profitability of jute cultivation. The value of the coefficient of multiple determination of jute cultivation was 0.75 which implied that about 75 percent of the total variation in the gross return could be explained by the included explanatory variables of the model. From the study the average household income from jute cultivation was 47803.28 tk. High price of inputs was the 1 problems in the study and lack of irrigation facility was the last problem. en_US
