The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural
University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka to find out the effect of planting geometry and
sowing time on growth and productivity of mustard during the period from October
2019 to March 2020. The experiment consisted of two factors; Factor A: Three sowing
times viz., S
1
: Sowing on 25
th
October, S
2
: Sowing on 10
th
November and S
: Sowing
on 30
th
November, 2019; Factors B: Four planting geometries viz., G
= Random
geometry, G
2
= 25 cm × 5 cm, G
3
= 30 cm × 5 cm and G
= 35 cm × 5 cm. The
experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three
replications. Plant height, leaves plant

, length of siliqua, 1000 seed weight, seed yield, stover
yield, biological yield and harvest index were compared among the combinations and
individual effects of treatments. Results indicated that, sowing time and planting
geometry had significant influence on most of the growth, yield and yield contributing
characters of mustard. The maximum seed yield (2.16 t ha
-1
) was obtained from S
and
the minimum seed yield (1.68 t ha
-1
) was obtained from S
. In the case of planting
geometry, the maximum seed yield (2.00 t ha
-1
3
) was obtained from G
and the minimum
seed yield (1.82 t ha
-1
) was obtained from G
1
3
. Thus, it was revealed that when mustard
was sown on 10
th
November with 30 cm × 5 cm geometric pattern resulted with the
highest seed yield (2.24 t ha
-1
). The lowest seed yield (1.58 t ha
-1
) was obtained from the
30
th
November sowing with random geometry. So, it may be recorded that mustard
sowing on 10
th
November with 30 cm × 5 cm planting geometry (S
) could be the
most suitable combination for the potential yield improvement in Bangladesh. |
