Abstract:
The present research was undertaken with the aims to investigate the application of
vermicompost and the effect of planting methods on growth and yield of onion in the field
condition. The experiment was conducted during the period from October, 2017 to March,
2018 at Horticultural farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. The
experiment was performed with Randomized Complete Block Design which consists of
two factors viz. factor A: Four levels of vermicompost, viz. VC
0
=control, VC
1
= 6 t/ha,
VC
2
= 9 t/ha, VC
3
= 12 t/ha and Factor B: Three types of planting method, viz. P
1
= Flat
method, P
2
= Furrow method and P
3
= Ridge method. The results demonstrated that
morphological parameters and reproductive components as well as yield showed
significantly different among the treatments. The highest plant height (54.80 cm), number
of leaves plant
-1
(7.60), bulb length (3.02 cm), bulb diameter (4.47 cm), neck diameter
(1.39 cm), root length (7.97 cm), fresh weight of bulb (42.73 g), dry weight of bulb (17.88
%), yield plot
-1
(769.20 g) and yield (7.12 t/ha) were obtained from treatment combination
VC

while the lowest was recorded from VC

. It may be summarized that 9 t/ha
vermicompost with ridge method of planting performed the maximum yield compared to
other treatments.
