dc.description.abstract The experiment was conducted at experimental plot of Agronomy farm of Sher-eBangla Agricultural University, Dhaka with a view to finding out the optimum dose of Nitrogen and Sulphur for maximizing the growth and yield of Black gram and their interactions on of Nitrogen and Sulphur fertilization for proper growth and yield of Black gram. The experiment consisted of treatment N 0 (no nitrogen) N (nitrogen @ 10 kg ha -1 ) N 2 (nitrogen @ 20 kg ha -1 ) N 3 (nitrogen @ 30 kg ha -1 ) and S (no sulphur), S 1 (sulphur @ 5 kg ha -1 ), S 2 (sulphur @ 10 kg ha -1 ). The experiment was laid out in a two factor randomized complete block design with three replications. Growth characters, yield contributing characters and yield of blackgram were significantly influenced by nitrogen, sulphur and their interaction. At vegetative growth stage, application of nitrogen @ 30 kg ha -1 combined with sulphur @ 10 kg ha produced the highest plant height (34.00 cm), number of leaves plant -1 (28.28), dry matter weight (23.12 g) and number of branches plant -1 (6.15) at harvest. The highest number of pods plant -1 (64.80), number of seeds pod -1 (5.46), pod length (4.52 cm), 1000-seed weight (36.49 g), seed yield (1.68 t ha -1 ), stover yield (2.03 t ha -1 ), biological yield (3.71 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (45.39 %) were found in nitrogen @ 10 kg ha . The highest seed yield (1.68 t ha -1 ) was obtained in nitrogen @ 30 kg ha and the lowest seed yield (.81 t ha -1 ) was obtained in no nitrogen application. The application sulphur @ 10 kg ha -1 -1 showed superiority in terms of the highest number of pods plant (54.75), number of seeds pod -1 (5.13), pod length (4.05 cm), 1000-seed weight (33.87 g), seed yield (1.40 t ha -1 ), stover yield (1.80 t ha -1 1 0 ), biological yield (3.20 t ha ) and harvest index (43.51 %). In case of interaction, the highest seed yield (1.81 t ha ) was recorded in nitrogen @ 30 kg ha -1 when combined with sulphur @ 10 kg ha . It can be concluded that the nitrogen @ 30 kg ha -1 appears to be promising fertilizer in terms of seed yield when combined with sulphur @ 10 kg ha -1 . en_US
