dc.description.abstract A field experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field of Slier-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period of June to November 2006 to study the growth and yield of inbred and hybrid rice with tiller separation at different growth periods. The experiment was conducted with two levels of treatments viz. A. Variety: BRRldhan 32 and Sonarbangla-1 and B. Tiller separation days: 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 days aller transplantation. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with 3 replications. Experimental results showed that variety had significant effect on all the studied parameters like plant height, number of tillers hill', total dry weight, dry weight of root, dry weight of stem, dry weight of leaf total grains panicle", tilled grains panicle -', 1000-grain weight, grain yield, biological yield and harvest index except effective tiller, ineftèctive tiller, panicle length, rachis branch panicle", unfilled grains panicle' and straw yield. Significantly the highest grain yield (5.46 t hi) was obtained from the hybrid variety compared to the inbred variety (4.54 t haj. The hybrid variety showed the highest harvest index (47.53%) and 1000-grain weight (27.12 g) compared to BRRidhan 32 but the highest number of total grains and filled grains panicl&' as well as flowering and maturity duration was found in inbred variety compared to hybrid variety. Tiller separation days also significantly influenced all the growth and yield attributes except panicle length, rachis branch panicle'', total grains panicle*', 1000-grain weight and harvest index. The tiller separation ranging from 20 to 30 days after transplantation (DAT) showed significantly the best performance than other tiller separation days. The highest grain yield (5.62 t hi') was obtained from the tiller separation at 20 DAT whereas the lowest grain yield (4.28 t haj was obtained from the tiller separation at 40 DAT. Maximum filled grains panicle*' (144.28) was observed from the tiller separation at 20 DAT. Total and effective tillers hill 1 was affected by tiller separation beyond 30 DAT. Delayed tiller separation extended the flowering and maturity duration. Therefore, it was concluded that earlier tiller separation (20-25 DAT) resulted higher grain yield in hybrid variety but no such variations was observed in inbred variety. en_US
