dc.description.abstract The experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU). Dhaka in field and laboratory condition during the period from october 2012 to may 2013 to study the effect of water and salt stress on growth and yield of brinjal. Consequently two experiments were conducted to find out (lie effect of water stress and salt tolerance on brinjal under the field and laboratory condition, in case of water stress, the two factors experiment was laid out in Split-plot design with three replications and the longest plant (90.83 cm) was found from W2 (water until fruit harvest) and the shortest plant (77.74 cm) from W (control. i.e. no water application). The highest yield per plant (2.70 kg) was found from W2 and the lowest yield per plant (1.20 kg) from W0. For variety, the longest plant (91.93 cm) was recorded from V, ((lol Begun), whereas the shortest plant (81.01 cm) front V4 (BARI Begun-9). The highest yield per plant (2.96 kg) was found from V1 (BARI Begun-I). whereas the lowest yield (1.34 kg) from V7 (()oI Begun). Due to the combined effect of water stress and variety, the longest plant (97.49 cm) was observed from W1V2 (water until fruit harvest and BARI Begun-4). again the shortest plant (67.32 cm) from \\:\; (control condition and BARI Begun-9). The highest yield per plant (3.91 kg) was found from W2V1 (water until fruit harvest and HARt Begun-[) and the lowest yield per plant (0.69 kg) from W0V, (control condition and Ciol Begun). The highest genetic advance along with high heritability was recorded for plant height. leaves per plant. fruits per plant. weight of individual fruit and length of brinjal indicating the importance of' these traits in selection for the maximum yield in consideraüon.ln case of salt stress. the two factors experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications where Elictor A is used for different concentration of salts and fitetor B used for different brinjal variety. For salt stress, the highest germination (96.1 1%) was recorded from TO (control condition i.e. 0 mM of NaCl). whereas the lowest germination (30.00%) from T4 (300 mM NaCl). The longest shoot (8.69 cm) was observed from To. whereas the shortest shoot (3.51 cm) from T4. The longest root (4.36 em) was recorded from To. whereas the shortest root (1.54 cm) from T4. In case of variety, the highest germination (83.33%) was found from V1 (Debgiri Begun). while the lowest germination (68.89%) from V7 (BARI 13e(111-7). The longest shoot (7.36 cm) was recorded from V: (Tal Bcgun-lslampuri). while the shortest shoot (5.33 cm) from V.1 (White Begun). The longest root (3.70 em) was found Iitm V2, while the shortest (2.36 cm) from V7. In case of the combined effect of salt stress and variety, the highest germination (i00%) was found from T0V1 (control condition and Debgiri Begun), while the lowest germination (22.22%) from [1/11, (300 mM NaCl and BARI Begun- lO).The longest shoot (9.58 cm) was observed from T0V2 (control condition and ThI Begun-Islanipuri). while the shortest shoot (2.50 cm) from T4V.1 (300 mM NaCl and White Begun). The longest root (5.10 em) was found front 'I'0V9 (control condition and BARI Begun-9), while the shortest root ([.07 cm) front T4V5 (300 mM NaCl and BARI Begun- i). en_US
