INFLUENCE OF THE ICT ADVANCEMENT ON RURAL FARMERS: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ON BARISHAL DIVISION OF BANGLADESH
HOWLADER, MD. AL-EMRAN
Agricultural development cannot be understood without the use of modern technologies
like Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The recent developments
in ICTs offer a unique opportunity to bring the production enhancing tools and
technologies to the growers with much cost-effective manner. Worldwide, many studies
were published on the role of application of ICTs in agricultural production. However,
only a few studies were carried out to know the impact of ICT based service delivery
system on agricultural production aspects in Bangladesh. Therefore, an attempt has
been made to find the factors of ICTs on agricultural production, especially in the food
crops, vegetables, fisheries and cattles. Using a randomized survey with a
questionnaire, interviews and focus group discussion, a study was carried out with a
sample of 100 farmers from a population comprises farmers all over the country. The
findings from the study after counterfactual analysis and difference in differences
analysis as well showed that with the application, advancement and use of ICTs,
agricultural production was accelerated which was evident from the degree of increase
of ICT. It had proved that the agricultural production from the ICT based service area
has increased more than that of non-ICT based area. It also had clarified that ICT
advancement were the key role in enhancement of annual income of rural farmers.

IDENTIFICATION OF EFFECTIVE POTATO MARKETING CHANNEL IN MUNSHIGANJ DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH

IDENTIFICATION OF EFFECTIVE POTATO MARKETING CHANNEL IN MUNSHIGANJ DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH
MAHMUD, MD. ROMIZ
Potato plays a significant role in increasing food security and income of the farmers of
Bangladesh. It is an important vegetable for its commercial and nutritional value in the
world as well as in Bangladesh. The marketing channel of potato is not well organized in
Bangladesh. This study was carried out to analyze the existing potato marketing channel
considering value addition and net margin conducted by the intermediaries. In order to
make an assessment of the marketing channel of potato, the study was conducted in
Shirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj district. Primary data were collected during the period
from February to April, 2020 through face to face interview with potato growers and potato
traders using structured survey schedule.Thirty potato producers, 80 value chain actors
(Faria, Bepari, wholesaler and retailer) were selected for the study. The study found four
actors between producer and consumer. They wereFaria, Bepari, wholesaler and retailer.
Besides, marketing of potato produced in Shirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganjwas moved
from the hands of producers to the hands of consumers through four separate
supplychains.Total cost per 100 kg of potato cultivation with marketing cost was Tk.
988.33. Besides, gross margin and net return were Tk. 553.38 and Tk. 149.17 respectively
for 100kg of potato. In the channel, the highest value (3.20 Tk/kg) was added by wholesaler
and the lowest value (1.29 Tk/kg) was added by Faria of the total value addition. Besides,
wholesaler made lowest marketing margin (0.50 Tk/kg) where retailer made highest
marketing margin (1.13 Tk/kg) among the actors. The present study found some problems
of the existing potato production and marketing system, such as potato growers did not get
fair price due to lack of economic storage facilities, existence of stronger middlemen,
inefficient transportation facilities, lack of proper marketing information and urgent
requirement of money immediately after the potato harvesting period by the farmers. Based
on the findings of the present study, it was recommended that credit facilities, timely supply
of inputs, application of modern production and postharvest technologies andstability of
price should be ensured along with the provision of storage, transport and market facilities.

ACTORS INFLUENCING WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN HOMESTEAD POULTRY REARING IN NARAYANGANJ DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH
AMENA, SADIKUN NAHAR
The present study was undertaken to determine the factor influences the participation of
rural women in poultry farming and to identify reasons, consequences and constraints to
participation in two villages of the Narayanganj district of Bangladesh. A total of 80 rural
women was randomly selected from two villages of Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj
district. From the study it was found that majority of the respondents belong to the age
group of 36-50 years, 48.8% was married, 57% women had nuclear family, 33.8% of the
respondent’s average monthly savings was between 1000 to 3000 taka, and majority of
the respondents (62.0%) rear chicken. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to
identify the relationships between the nine factors and the participation of rural women in
poultry practices. The major findings of this study revealed that family size, husband’s
occupation and communication device like television positively influenced women
participation in homestead poultry rearing. Besides, primary and secondary education
level negatively influenced women participation in homestead poultry rearing. On the
contrary, age, marital status, type of family, average monthly income and smartphone had
no significant effect on women participation in homestead poultry rearing. Respondents
marked source of income as 1
st
reason to participate in poultry rearing followed by
rearing to supply food to their family in the 2
nd
ranking and meat production in the 3
ranking. Insufficient fund, cultural/traditional belief, poor management skill and poor
access to training facilities were the major constraints to women participation in poultry
rearing. Most women thought respects from husband & children, independent decision
making authority and consideration of their views for household decisions improved
greatly due to participating in poultry.

estimated in Abdulpur bazar and the estimated profit was BDT 797.09 tk. Among the all fish
species the highest values fish was found as Pabda and per kg price of this species was calculated
BDT 704.00. Whereas the lowest values was found as Pungus with BDT 122.21 kg. The study
recommend that to improve the fish marketing, it is essential to establishment of ice factory,
improvement of fish transport facilities and introduction of fish quality control measures.
