An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural&#13;
University. Dhaka during the period from October 2004 to February 2005 to study the&#13;
, .&#13;
effect of different levels of fertilizer and manure viz. control. organic manure (23.11-&#13;
t/ha), inorganic fertilizer (Urea 3~2 k&amp;/lta, MP 180 kglba, TSP 158 kgIha) and mixture&#13;
of organic and inorganic fertilizer (Cowdung 11.5 tJha, Urea 177 kg/ha, TSP 62 kg/ha&#13;
and MP 63 kglha) and different mulching materials viz. no mulch ~), rice straw&#13;
(MI). water hyacinth (M2) and black polythene (M3) on the growth and yield of&#13;
lettuce. The experiment was conducted in the"'Rand()mizedComplete Block Design&#13;
~ ...&#13;
(RCBD) with three replications. "APpliCation of different levels 'of fertilizer and&#13;
manure significantly influence the growth and yield of lettuce. Organic plus&#13;
inorganic fertilizer treatment resulted in the highest gross (46.01 tJha) and marketable&#13;
yield (45.46 t/ha). The highest yield (45.7t1ha) was recorded from black polythene&#13;
mulch, while the lowest (38.71t/ha) was recorded from unmulch treatment. The&#13;
combined effect of various levels of fertilizer and manure as well as mulches were&#13;
..... also found significant incase of lettuce production. The use of organic plus inorganic&#13;
fertilizer with black polythene mulch produced the highest gross (50.27 t/ha) and&#13;
marketable yield (49.62 tlha). The lowest gross (35.44 tJha) and marketable yield&#13;
(34.9 t/ha ) were recorded from the control treatment where no manure and fertilizer&#13;
as well as no mulch were used. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was the maximum (3.23)&#13;
in the treatment combination of cowdung with water hyacinth mulch whereas, the&#13;
minimum (2.09) was recorded from the water hyacinth with no fertilizer treatment

A field experiment ":,,asconducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural&#13;
University, Dhaka, during October 2004 to February 2005 to study the effects of different&#13;
intercropping practices and levels of nitrogen on the growth and yield of carrot. Three&#13;
different intercropping practices viz. non-intercrop, Red amaranth intercrop and Bengal&#13;
spinach intercrop and three levels of nitrogen viz 0, 200, 250 kg per hectare were used in&#13;
the study. Carrot was sown as a sole crop at a spacing of 25 x 10 em and Red amaranth&#13;
and Bengal spinach were sown in between the two rows of carrot as intererops. The&#13;
experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three&#13;
replications. Leafy vegetables intereropping had significant influence on yield and yield&#13;
attributes of carrot, except, root diameter. The highest root length (16.59 ern), fresh .&#13;
weight of root per plant (135 g), and marketable yield (45.40 t/ha) were recorded from&#13;
control intercrop (10) and lowest were found from Bengal spinach intercrop (i2). Nitrogen&#13;
(N) had remarkable effect on growth and yield of carrot. The maximum root length&#13;
'(16.83 em), root diameter (4.98 ern), fresh weight of root per plant (141.40 g), and&#13;
marketable yield (47.06 t/ha) were obtained from 25b kg Nlha '(N2) and minimum from&#13;
control (No). In respect of combined effect control intercrop with 250 kg N/ha (lON2)&#13;
produced highest root length (17.3Tcm), root diameter (5.33 em), fresh weight of root&#13;
per plant (161.70 g) and marketable yield (52.13 t/ha), Highest intercrop yield (28.33&#13;
t/ha) obtained from the IlN2 (Red amaranth intercrop and 250 Kg N/ha) treatment.&#13;
Economic analysis showed that Red amaranth intercrop and 250 Kg N/ha gave maximum&#13;
economic benefit with the benefit cost ratio of 5.22.&#13;

<title>SUNFLOWER BASED INTERCROPPING WITH LEAFY VEGETABLES</title>

An experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Farm, Sher-e-Bangla &#13;
Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November 2004 to February &#13;
2005 to investigate the sunflower based intercropping with leafy vegetables. There &#13;
were two variety of sunflower viz. Kironi, Sunwheat-103 and four intercrop viz. non­ &#13;
intercrop, Red amaranth, Bengal spinach and Pak-choi. The treatment combinations &#13;
were set in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. &#13;
Growth and yield parameters were recorded and the cost benefit analysis was &#13;
computed to assess the yield potentiality and profitability of sunflower and &#13;
intercropping of leafy vegetable. Sunflower variety Had significant effect on plant &#13;
height, number of leaves, diameter of the head, seed yield, 1000 seed weight and oil &#13;
content. The highest seed yield (961.11 kg/ha) was obtained from variety Kironi. &#13;
Intercroppe.d leafy vegetables intercropping had remarkable effect on growth, &#13;
flowering and yield. The combinations of variety and intercrop significantly &#13;
influenced the plant height, number of leaves, diameter of the head, seed yield and &#13;
1000 seed weight. The highest seed yield (1133 kg/ha) was found in the treatment &#13;
combination of tall variety sunflower (Y.r) and control intercrop (Io). Highest intercrop &#13;
yield (13.69 t/ha) obtained from the dwarf variety and Red amaranth intercrop (VDIL) &#13;
treatment combination. Economic analysis showed that tall variety sunflower (Vr) &#13;
with Red amaranth intercrop (I1J gave the best economic return (Tk 77539/ha) and &#13;
benefit cost ratio of 2.4 5.

The present study was conducted at the Biotechnology Laboratory, Biotechnology &#13;
Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the period from &#13;
September, 2004 to June, 2005 to investigate the effect of different concentrations of BAP &#13;
and NAA on virus free plant regeneration, shoot multiplication and different concentrations &#13;
of IBA and IAA on in vitro root formation ofbanana cv. BARI-I. &#13;
The culture meristem first turned brown in colour in 4-5 days and after 30-50 days &#13;
later a green globular hard coat mass grow to be round in shape producing a ball like &#13;
structure. From this ball like structure adventitious plantlets were developing. &#13;
Among the different concentration 7.5 mgl," BAP + 0.5 mgl," NAA showed the&#13;
highest shoot proliferation 0.75, 2.75 and 6.25 shoots per explant at 10, 20 and 30 DAI&#13;
respectively. The longest shoot was produced by the treatment concentration 7.5 mgl," BAP &#13;
+ 0.5 mgl," NAA treatment (1.03, 2.45 and 3.38 cm) at 10, 20 and 30 DAI respectively. The&#13;
maximum number of leaves (2.50, 3.25 and 7.00 leaves/explant at 10, 20 and 30 DAI)&#13;
produced on the medium supplemented with 7.5 mgl," BAP and 0.50 mgl," NAA. The&#13;
longest leaves was produced by the treatment concentration 7.5 mgl," BAP + 0.5 mgl,"&#13;
NAA treatment (0.85, 2. 70 and 4.23 cm at 10, 20 and 30 DAI) respectively. For root&#13;
initiation half strength MS medium supplemented with different levels of IBA (0, 0.5, 1.0 and &#13;
1.50 rngl.") and IAA (0, 0.5 and 1.0 mgL"1) in order to allow root formation. Root numbers&#13;
varied with different concentrations of IBA and IAA. The highest number of roots were&#13;
produced by 0.5 mgl." IAA + 0.5 mgl," IBA (3.50, 4.50 and 6.50 per explant respectively).&#13;
The highest length was observed at 10, 20 and 30 DAI in the treatment concentration 0.5&#13;
mgl," IAA and IBA (2.93, 4.63 and 5.88 cm) which was statistically significant. Meristem&#13;
derived plantlet transferred to polybags containing 1 : 1 (ground soil : cowdung) mixture after&#13;
7 days hardening in room temperature (28-30°C) and established plantlet is ready for&#13;
planting.
