<description>VALUE CHAIN AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT OF MAIZE AND SUGARCANE: A STUDY IN SELECTED DISTRICTS OF CHITTAGONG HILL TRACTS OF BANGLADESH
ALAM, MD. NAZMUL
The present study was undertaken to assess the entrepreneurship and value chain &#13;
development opportunity on maize and sugarcane in some selected areas of Chittagong Hill&#13;
Tracts. The purposive random sampling technique was followed for collecting data in this study.&#13;
A total of 69 maize growers, 74 sugarcane growers and 37 intermediaries were selected.&#13;
Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. Acharya’s methods were used for estimating&#13;
marketing efficiency. Factor analysis was done to measure the factors affecting value chain and&#13;
entrepreneurship development and for measuring marketing performance, price spread and&#13;
growers share were calculated. About 85-89 percent maize and sugarcane grower’s main&#13;
occupation was farming. Most of the growers occupied less than 0.5 ha of land.  The total&#13;
production cost of maize and sugarcane were at Tk 43544.61per hectare and Tk 180615.67&#13;
respectively. Marketing cost of the farmers was Tk. 769.15 for maize and Tk. 1032.56 for&#13;
sugarcane per metric ton. Marketing cost for maize by different intermediaries was at Tk. 2192.5,&#13;
Tk. 1491.00, Tk. 1210.32 and Tk. 2023.97 for Faria, Wholesaler, Aratdar and Bepari&#13;
respectively. Marketing cost for sugarcane was at Tk. 4726.72, Tk. 2884.45, Tk. 2473.4 and Tk.&#13;
4121.09 for Faria, Wholesaler, Aratdar and Bepari respectively. For maize growers highest&#13;
BCR were found when maize are sold in district market and it is 1.078 for growers and lowest&#13;
BCR were found .916 when maize were sold at farm gate. For sugarcane growers highest BCR is&#13;
1.277 and lowest BCR is 1.077 for district market and farm gate market selling respectively. In&#13;
maize and sugarcane value chain Bepari were added highest values. Education, market price,&#13;
capital and credit availability, location of the market and number of traders were the most&#13;
important factors which significantly influence the value chain and entrepreneurship&#13;
development in the study area. For developing value chain in the study area some constraints&#13;
like lack of market information’s, unavailability of credits, low local demand, poor transportation &#13;
facilities, market toll, lack of credit facilities, absence of storage facilities and lack of available market&#13;
place was found. In this area, emphasis should be given to improved storage, establishment of&#13;
feed mills, advertising through electronic and print media, improvement of road and communication&#13;
facilities, lessening of market toll, and credit facilities from credit institution to improve effective &#13;
production and marketing of maize and sugarcane.

<description>TEMPORARY RURAL URBAN MIGRATION AND ITS IMPACTS ON RURAL HOUSEHOLDS: A STUDY ON SELECTED RICKSHAW PULLERS IN AGARGAON AREA, DHAKA.
MD. MAHMUDUZZAMAN
Rural-Urban migration is the most crucial component of internal migration of&#13;
any country. It plays an important role in poverty reduction and economic&#13;
development. In Bangladesh rural-urban migration is the most important factor&#13;
for rapid urbanization. In urban centers, slum is a popular destination for poor&#13;
rural-urban migrants. More than 15 million people lives in the slums of six&#13;
divisional cities of Bangladesh. Megacity Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, alone&#13;
holds about 3.4 million people in 4966 slums.  A significant number of slum&#13;
dwellers are rickshaw pullers and residing temporarily and seasonally in Dhaka&#13;
city.  Present study was an effort to examine socio-economic condition of&#13;
rickshaw pullers, to investigate their nature of rickshaw pulling, to explore their&#13;
income and expenditure pattern and lastly to identify their problems and&#13;
solutions altogether. Moreover, this study attempted to highlight the impacts of&#13;
the earnings from city on the rural rickshaw pullers’ household level. To fulfill&#13;
the objectives, Agargaon area of Dhaka was purposively selected. Simple&#13;
random sampling technique were used for collecting cross sectional data from a&#13;
total of 117 rickshaw pullers with the help of pre-designed and pre-tested&#13;
questionnaire. Descriptive statistics like average, percentage, etc., were&#13;
followed to analyze the data and to achieve the objectives of the study. It was&#13;
found from the study that all the respondents and their family have improved&#13;
their food consumption level through the income from rickshaw pulling. Not&#13;
only the food consumption, but also this rickshaw pulling occupation made&#13;
them capable of educated their children and improved their clothing style. This&#13;
study showed that the monthly average household income distribution among&#13;
rickshaw pullers were significantly better than the national average rural&#13;
household income. Study found that more than half of their incomes spend for&#13;
food items.  This will directly enhance the family calorie intake level. Savings&#13;
from rickshaw pulling has also increased the ability to spend in education for&#13;
their children and also in agriculture as well as acquiring land from others.

<title>PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF POTATO CULTIVATION: A STUDY AT DEBIGANJ THANA UNDER PANCHAGARH DISTRICT</title>
<link>http://localhost:8080/handle/123456789/1733</link>
<description>PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF POTATO CULTIVATION: A STUDY AT DEBIGANJ THANA UNDER PANCHAGARH DISTRICT
SAHA, SUBIR KUMAR
The present study was basically designed to assess the “Profitability Analysis of Potato&#13;
Cultivation: A Study at Debiganj Thana under Panchagarh District”. Farmers were&#13;
randomly selected for data collection purpose. The selected villages were  Debganj Sadar,&#13;
Pamoli, Kaligonj ,Vaulagonj, Dabiduba and Sonahar under Debiganj thana in Panchagarh&#13;
district. Descriptive statistics and Cobb- Douglas production function were employed to&#13;
achieve the objective of the study. The major findings of the study revealed that the&#13;
potato production was profitable. Per hectare total cost of potato was 193779.34 TK and&#13;
the gross return was 299500.00 TK. Per hectare net return for potato production is&#13;
105720.66 TK. The results of the Cobb- Douglas production function indicated that the&#13;
gross return of the potato production were highly influenced by the human labour,&#13;
seedlings, irrigation, manure, fertilizer, insecticide etc. The present study shows that there&#13;
were some constrains in the production of potato. These problems were shortage of&#13;
financial capital, high price of input, low price of output, lack of quality seed, inadequate&#13;
extension services etc. It showed that inefficient management of potato cultivation may&#13;
turn into loss. So the effective management of potato, enough cold storage facility was&#13;
required for the highest net return of the potato cultivation. For these Bangladesh&#13;
government should have play vital role for the effective management of potato. At the&#13;
end of the study some policy and recommendation of the potato production are given for&#13;
the view of effective management purpose.
