The purpose of the study was to assess the extent of use of media in receiving
information by the mango growers and to explore the relationship of the
selected characteristics of the mango growers with their use of media in
receiving information. The study has been conducted based on data collection
in the selected villages of Chapainawabganj municipality of Chapainawabganj
Sadar upazila. Data were collected from 93 mango growers from 20 April,
2017 and completed in 15 May, 2017. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Product
Moment Coefficient of Correlation (r) were used for data analysis. The results
show that the highest proportion (77.4 %) of the mango growers had medium
use of media in receiving information and 12.9 percent of the mango growers
had low use of media in receiving information and 9.7 percent felt in high use
of media in receiving information. It was found a significant positive
relationship of mango farmers’ education, size of mango orchard, annual
income from mango, knowledge on mango cultivation and cosmopoliteness
with their use of media in receiving information. As per Media Used Index
(MUI), mobile phone ranked the 1
st
and internet ranked as last position. It is
recommended that the DAE, Horticultural Center, Mango Research Station and
NGOs should take necessary steps considering the significant variables with a
view to motivating the mango growers towards higher use of media in
receiving information.

The major purpose of the study was to determine the extent of innovativeness
of betel leaf growers to use improved practices for betel leaf cultivation in
some selected areas of Rajshahi district. Attempts were also made to describe
some of the selected characteristics of the betel leaf growers and their effect to
innovativeness of using improved farm practices in betel leaf cultivation. One
hundred and thirty three (133) growers were selected randomly from a total of
1127 growers of two unions of Bagmara upazila under Rajshahi district. An
interview schedule was used for collection of data, which took 25 days from 5
July to 29 July, 2017. The findings of the study indicate that more than half
(60.9 percent) of the growers were found moderately innovative compared to
39.1 percent were found highly innovative in practicing improved techniques
for betel leaf cultivation. Pearson Product-moment Correlation Coefficient
indicates that among the selected characteristics, farm size, farming experience,
knowledge in betel leaf cultivation and attitude towards betel leaf cultivation
showed positive significant relationship with their innovativeness to use
improved practices. On the other hand, age, education, annual family income
and agricultural training of the growers did not show any significant
relationship with their innovativeness to use improved practices in betel leaf
cultivation.

The main objective of the study was to describe the socio-economic
profile of the mango farmers in the study area, to determine the
hindrances and prospects of mango cultivation in Bangladesh from the
perspective of farmers, to ascertain the hindrances and prospects of
mango cultivation. The study was also conducted to explore the
contributing relationship between the selected characteristics of the
mango farmers and their hindrances and prospects of mango cultivation.
The study was undertaken purposively in Natore Sadar Upazila under
Natore district. An authenticated and well-structured interview schedule
(questionnaire) was used to collect data from 110 mango farmers during
17
th
July to 14
th
August, 2017. Data analysis was done using statistical
tools such as frequency counts, mean, standard deviation, co-efficient of
variance and multiple regressions. The finding showed that more than
half 60.91 percent respondents had moderate hindrance faced while 20.91
percent had minimum hindrance and 18.18 percents had serious
hindrance on mango cultivation. Majority 58.18 percent of the farmers
were in medium prospects category while 25.45 percent were in low
prospects category and 16.36 percent were high prospects category. The
results also showed that farmers’ age and mango cultivating area had also
significant negative relationship with farmers’ hindrances on mango
cultivation. Age and mango cultivating area had significant positive
relationship with the farmers’ prospects on mango cultivation.

SUSTAINABILITY OF SMALLHOLDER SEED ENTERPRISES IN BANGLADESH

SUSTAINABILITY OF SMALLHOLDER SEED ENTERPRISES IN BANGLADESH
HOSSEN, MD. SADDAM
Smallholders seed cultivation, processing, and marketing of major crops such
as rice, wheat and maize have been largely a neglected issue of the
government, despite Food and Agriculture Organization reports that the
smallholders seed enterprise (SSEs) are the best way of ensuring the
availability and quality of non-hybrid seeds. The concept SSE is built around
the notion of seed production by smallholders with a view to fulfill their own
demand, sell in the local market and foster a commercial perspective in the
informal seed system (i.e., beyond government’s initiatives for seed production
and development). The objectives of the study were to develop a set of
indicators of sustainable SSEs, evaluate sustainability of SSEs, and formulate
policy information. The study assessed the sustainability of SSEs by
constructing composite indicators (CIs), consisting three dimensions: social,
economic and institution. Data were collected from 120 smallholders of six
villages of Nagarpur (Tangail) and Shahjadpur (Shirajganj) upazilas. A number
of statistical tools, namely, multiple regression analysis and methods such as
developing CIs were employed to produce the results and findings. The study
results indicate that (i) an overwhelming majority (92.5%) of the smallholder
had moderate to highly sustainable seed enterprises, in terms of the selected
nine indicators of dimensions and (ii) highly contributing (based on
standardized coefficients) indicators were institutional function, marketing
prices of seeds, human capital, and marketing facility. The findings conclude
that existing institutions (like market) that facilitate agricultural development
play a key role in achieving the sustainability of SSEs. Policy should place
emphasis on enhancing institutional commitment, coordination and cooperation
in providing necessary services for seed cultivation, post-harvest and
marketing.
